Praying for the Minister’s Child

I’m sure you’re familiar with the names Denzel Washington, Condoleezza Rice, Marvin Gaye and Jessica Simpson.  Why would I mention these four individuals and what do they have in common?  If you guessed that they are all preacher’s kids, also known by a term I’ve really not appreciated much…..PKs,” then you are correct!  Minister’s children are often thrust into the middle of the limelight and held to a very high and unreasonable expectation.  The ministry home is challenged to help their children navigate the stormy waters of being the child of the minister.

Being the wife of a minister and a child of a minister, I believe I am qualified to speak to the unintentional neglect of time that sometimes a minister’s child receives.  Tension will always exist in the family between time spent working in ministry and time spent with the family.  We must draw a clear distinction between being at home and spending time with family.  The minister must remember that being “in the house” does not always qualify as spending time with the family.  In his declining years, Dr. W.A. Criswell, the retired Pastor of First Baptist Dallas, spoke openly and honestly that the lack of attention to family had created a painful estrangement from his daughter.  The minister must give great attention to the family’s schedule and the church calendar.

Join me in praying for strong ministry homes, built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ and growing fruitful relationships between ministry parents and God’s greatest gift to them….their children!
