Do You love your Neighbors?

Focus Scripture:  Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Matthew 22:37-39

In the book of Matthew we find a verse that has been called the love commandment.  A group was trying to trip Jesus up by asking Him, “Which is the greatest commandment?” Jesus replied by quoting from Leviticus.  Jesus’ words are simple.  Love God and love your neighbor just like you love yourself.

If we are going to heed these words, we must first have a personal love relationship with our Lord.  It is this relationship which calls Christians to reach out to our neighbors with an attitude of compassion.  Who is our neighbor?  Anyone nearby.  Billy Graham once said that when you love God, He gives you a supernatural power to love your neighbor.
Certainly expressing our love to our neighbors will not earn us salvation.  Rather serving our neighbors will be a natural expression of our committed relationship to God.  Truly God loves all of our neighbors and if we love Him, then we will love those whom He loves.

PRAYER:  Father, Help us to stay centered on our love of God so that He will empower us to love those whom He loves.  Thank you for loving all people and making your grace available to all through Jesus.  Guide our thoughts and our actions as we encounter our neighbors this day. –Amen
