Focus Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:1-4 "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
We are enjoined by Scripture to pray for those who exercise authority over us. Today’s Bible Reading teaches us to: First, pray for everyone. Second, pray for national leaders, that they may govern in such a way that citizens will have the opportunity to live godly and peaceable lives. Finally, pray with the understanding that God desires all men to know the truth and be saved.
As Christian citizens of the United States, we are to join in asking God for His clear guidance for our national leaders. They have the potential of cooperating with God in pointing the way forward for millions of people in our nation. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)
Daniel prayed for the cruel Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. God brought the king to his knees, grazing humbly, like an ox. Cyrus, the Persian King who overthrew Babylon and gave God’s people permission to return and rebuild the temple, is an example of God moving the heart of an unbelieving leader. Whether leaders are believers or lost, God may use them to implement His purposes.
We pray that leaders in each branch of our American government will stand faithfully and convincingly for truth, righteousness, justice, and mercy. Remember, our prayers can go through doors in the White House, Congress, Supreme Court, the Kremlin, Parliaments, and every ruling body on this earth. The power of God knows no barriers that cannot be penetrated.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, we are grateful that You have allowed us the benefits of living in this land of freedom. We thank You that we have the privilege of choosing those who serve us in leadership roles. Father, we now ask You to direct our President, Vice President, Cabinet, each member of Congress, and Court Justices to seek Your wisdom to govern righteously so that Your mercy and justice will be evident in this land.
We pray, also, that You will raise up leaders around this earth who will be instruments in Your hand to seek peace until the Prince of Peace returns to rule and the kingdoms of this earth become the Kingdom of our God.
We pray in the Name of Him Who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Amen.
