THE PREEMINENCE OF CHRIST
“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21
In 1883 the Buncombe Baptist Association was formally organized by a small number of churches scattered throughout the county. Baptist Associations have existed for over 300 years and are the oldest mission partner for the local church in Baptist life. Together, as an association, we celebrate 138 years of blessed ministry. The BBA has navigated ministry to local churches through times of war, economic struggle, changing culture, technological advancement, two pandemics and more. Through the celebrations and challenges of 138 years the BBA has partnered faithfully with local churches that have advanced the kingdom work locally and globally. The BBA exists because of the local church and for the local church!!
This wonderful partnership of Churches has strived to “keep the main thing the main thing.” Philippians is a very personal letter from Paul and Timothy focused on the elements of vital Christian living. Some have referred to Philippians as “The Book of Joy” and others have termed it “The Book of Christian Experience”. The churches partnering with the BBA have continually sought to keep the preeminence of Christ as the powerful bond that drives our passion in ministry. Philippians emphasizes that Christ is everything to the believer. Philippians 1:27 launches the Christian Church to a complete and worthy focus on the “gospel of Christ.” The believer is in Christ, but Christ is also in the believer. He is the reason and empowerment for the believer’s daily service. Christ works mightily in the believer as Paul relates in Philippians 2: 3-4 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interest of others”.
Pray that we are not sidetracked! Pray that the Buncombe Baptist Association of churches keeps the main thing the main thing: the preeminence of Christ!
