“…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
Here we see the very last recorded words of Jesus before He ascended into heaven. If it is the last thing He said, then you better believe it is important! If you are saved, you have power that comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit within you. Power for what? Jesus tells us, to “be my witnesses.” To be His hands, feet, and voice in a world that so desperately needs Him! But look at what the disciples did right after Jesus ascended into heaven.
They returned to Jerusalem and began a 10 day prayer meeting (v. 14). 10 DAYS! They knew the Holy Spirit was coming, but they didn’t know when or what to expect. So they prayed. Think about that. The precursor to one of the greatest works of God in history came after His followers had prepared their hearts, minds, and souls, spending quality and quantity time seeking the face and will of the Father. They prayed, worshiped, repented, praised, pleaded…you get the picture! And then what happened? God worked through THEM to spread His good news to every tribe, tongue, and nation in Jerusalem that day. We get a snapshot of the start and fulfillment (at least in part) of the Great Commission in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost!
Now think about yourself. Would you describe your own life as one that God works powerfully through? Are you fulfilling the ultimate calling on your life; to be His witness? There’s no telling how God will work through you if you do what these first disciples did…spend quality and quantity time with the Father in prayer, praise, and repentance. If you have failed in this area, start today and see what He will do!
