Primary Role: The primary role of the Lead Pastor is to preach and model the Word, shepherd the body, provide a role model to share the gospel and disciple fellow believers, champion the recently established vision for the church, and develop and encourage the leaders.

Profile: The Lead Pastor is to be the primary spiritual leader and principal shepherd at Oak Grove Baptist Church of Fairview, NC.  He and the Associate Pastors and the Elder Board shepherd the congregation, to build up and equip the Body to do the works of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:12).

This position requires a pastor’s heart – a love for God and His Word, a love for people, a willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit, a committed prayer life, a strong desire to know and glorify God through dynamic personal and corporate worship, a heart for missions, discipleship, and outreach, personal integrity, and a sincere interest in the spiritual growth and success of others.

The Lead Pastor is a strong and effective communicator, able to convey the mission, vision, and core values of the church in ways that inspire congregational support and participation in the ministry. He believes in the local church to bring the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

He loves to minister to people, to bring them into the Kingdom of God, to help them navigate life through Kingdom principles in becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus, and to become disciples that make disciples. 

The Lead Pastor knows his giftings and securely operates in them as a leader. He encourages and empowers the other pastors in their Spirit-led gifting and ministries. He models how to love and care for others.

The Lead Pastor will provide leadership to the church Staff (pastoral and office) giving them the freedom to exercise their gifting to minister to the Body and offering them opportunities to develop and grow in their ministry. 

He will, in concert with the Elder Board (Pastors and Lay Elders), oversee church discipline and manage conflicts within Oak Grove. He will seek to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church body while focusing on the biblical essentials while offering freedom on the non-essentials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Advance the disciple-making vision of the church in partnership with the Pastors, Lay Elders, and church body.
  • Be a personal example in pursuing a personal relationship with Christ as demonstrated by a growing walk with Him
  • Champion the mission, vision, and core values of the church. Directing the plans for ministry and church growth including building the church organization and ministry groups focused on key ministry segments of our church and community
  • Exhibit management skills to establish long-range plans, guide projects, and encourage noble stewardship of church finances
  • Effectively delegate the activities of the church body through church ministry teams and other volunteers.
  • Maintain healthy unity while leading the church through change to reach and mature believers in Christ
  • Supervise, empower, encourage, and develop pastors, staff and lay leaders within the church, creating a process to help each group improve and master their ministry areas
  • Create opportunities to motivate and train members, ministry leaders, and staff to identify and develop their spiritual gifts. In doing so, he will hold to the model of Ephesians 4:12 ‘equipping the saints to do ministry’
  • In partnership with the Pastors and Lay Elders, find and develop leaders in the body
  • Oversee church discipline and manage conflict in the church. Seek to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church

Preaching/Teaching

  • Be the primary expositor of God’s word to the congregation. As such, he shall strive to communicate Biblical truth with excellence, providing examples of application that the Body can integrate into daily life (Preach at least 75% of the Sundays a year)
  • Teach Bible Study classes as needed and occasionally speak at youth and young adult groups

Counseling and Outreach

  • Demonstrating personal evangelism and developing others to share their faith in a loving way.
  • Provide pastoral care and counseling in cooperation with other pastors
  • Conduct weddings and funerals as requested in cooperation with other pastors

Ministry to the Sick

  • Pray for and encourage the sick, and/or empower other pastors, Elders, and lay leaders to pray for the sick in accordance with James 5:15-16

Other Involvement

  • Develop a voice in the Fairview/Cane Creek community that can address matters of social and civic importance from a Biblical point of view. Maintain edifying relationships with like-minded pastors in the Fairview/Cane Creek area.

Ministry Support and Accountability

  • The elder team, the deacon body, the staff and church members will gladly work toward the success of the senior pastor.
  • The elder team will provide semi-annual reviews and evaluations of the senior pastor with the specific focus being on personal health, relationships, character, communication, team work, church growth and doctrine.
